His/hers vs He's/she's - Grammar Tip
Hello fellow writers,
Maybe you just started writing your first story and you feel your grammar is rusty or maybe English isn't your first language and you're not sure how to use these words. This post is here to offer a bit of guidance.
Enjoy!
HIS/HERS vs HE'S/SHE'S
- His is a possessive pronoun, it is used to show something belonging to or connected with a man, boy or male animal.
Her/hers is a possessive pronoun, it is used to show something belonging to or connected with a woman, girl or female animal.
ATTENTION! Shis does NOT exist in the English language as a possessive pronoun, the correct word is HER/HERS. Also, please don't confuse SHIS with SHE'S.
Examples:
I was freezing and he game his jacket.
I broke her mug. But the mug wasn't hers to begin with.
I'm wearing his pants/I'm wearing shis pants. (I'm wearing her pants.)
- He's is the contraction of "he+is" and she's is the contraction of "she+is".
Examples:
He's (he+is) such a distraction. She's (she+is) a pretty lady.
He's daydreaming by his desk. She's trying on some shoes.
Shis angry with the receptionist. = INCORRECT (She's angry with the receptionist.)
