Choosing the right genre for your book
Why is it so important to choose the right genre for your book?
Many readers are choosing the stories they want to read by searching them by genres.
If a reader loves Science Fiction, they might probably be interested to check out other stories in the genre.
In this way, Booknet often recommends books to readers depending on their preferences.
If your story is not Science Fiction, but you add this genre to your book, it may confuse readers and they won't continue with your story in any case.
Also, if Booknet shows your book in the New Releases in a genre and your book doesn't belong to it, your book might not reach new readers.
What are the common mistakes while choosing a genre?
1. Choosing Romantic Fantasy for the books that have no Fantasy elements.
Note that the Romantic Fantasy genre is not intended for books that have no Fantasy elements. Fantasy elements are supernatural powers, different worlds, Supernatural creatures, etc. Therefore, avoid adding Romance books to the genre of Romantic Fantasy.
2. Mixing 2 totally opposite genres.
Another common mistake is to mix 2 totally different genres, for example, Science Fiction and Fantasy or Romance and Action thrillers.
These genres can't be mixed as Science Fiction is the genre that is based on scientific facts while Fantasy is based on the imagination of the author and supernatural elements. Romance is related to love stories while Action thrillers are not focused on romantic relationships.
3. Adding Erotic books to non-erotic genres
Sometimes, writers consider that it is enough to set the restriction on the book when its content is full erotic but they don't add it to the Erotic genre.
On the platform, there are readers that don't prefer Erotic content even if they read 18+ books. Note that 18+ doesn't mean that the book is fully Erotic, it may just have one or two mature scenes. That's why when your book is filled with 60% or more Erotic content, you need to add it to the category Erotic or its subgenres.
Take into account that choosing the wrong genres intentionally may decrease the performance of your story.
This may also affect the visibility of your story as it won't be shown to the readers of the same genre.
Besides, our moderators may deactivate one of the genres permanently and there won't be a way to add it back.
How to choose the genre correctly?
1. Check out what elements your story consists of.
For example, if the storyline is focused on a romantic relationship, add the book to the Romance genre. If the book has elements of suspense or mystery, add Romantic Suspense or Romantic Mystery as the second genre.
2. Select only related genres.
It means that if the main genre of your book is Erotic, choose its subgenres as the second genre.
For example, Fantasy and Dark Fantasy; Science Fiction and Space Opera, etc.
3. Search for the information about the genres if you have no idea what genre your book belongs to.
If you are not sure what genre to choose, don't hesitate to search the information about it. Also, don't hesitate to contact our Support Team for help.
