“Jordan Carter?” A tentative male voice asked from the other end of the line.
“Whose number did you dial?” I snapped and Kyle gave me the eye. I was just feeling antsy today and would take it out on whomever and whenever I pleased. “I’m driving please make it quick.”
I turned on the radio and put on Lenny Kravitz, he usually calmed my frazzled nerves.
“Is there a reason for this call dude? Or you just called to antagonize me further?”
“Why do you keep repeating my name?! Can you just get to the point already dude?”
“Don’t bother telling me your name I won’t remember and if this is about my so-called father I’m not interested in hearing anything that has to do with him, so save your breath.”
“It is about your father-he wants to sue the hospital that admitted you when-”
“Get to the point. I know why I was in the hospital. I don’t need reminders.”
Kyle grabbed the phone from the hands-free stand. “Please hold a minute doctor?” he pressed the mute button and gave me a reprimanding look. “Snap out of it JC.”
“But I did? Didn’t I just snap at him?”
“I don’t mean it like that and you know it.”
“What’s going on with you? Why are you so cranky today? Wait, hold that thought,” he said before speaking to the caller. “Hello Dr. Burns, Kyle Kinley here.”
“Hie Kyle,” I could feel the doctor’s smile from this side. “How are you and the family? How are little KJ and the twins?”
“They’re doing great. Growing so fast,” my traitorous friend smiled and I rolled my eyes. “How may I help you?” he asked and put on the loudspeaker so I could listen in on the conversation that obviously involved me.
“Alexander Carter filed a lawsuit against the hospital. He claims we tampered with his blood samples. He says we extracted them without his permission. Can Jordan please come through so we can sort this out?”
“No.” I said.
“We’ll be there. Give us twenty.”
“Thank you Kyle. See you soon.”
“What did you do that for? We gave a meeting with our new artists,” I shot a glare at him. “I’m not going there. We both know that Alex isn’t my father. I’m not going to waste my time by driving all that way to feed his ego.”
“I wouldn’t be so sure…” Kyle trailed off, a frown on his face. “What if this time he’s right Jordan?”
“Why did he wait until now? This happened months ago Ky,” I narrowed my eyes, trying to rein my temper. “He’s just doing this to get my attention-as usual.”
Kyle sighed and rubbed his forehead. “Jones came to see me a few days ago. He looked troubled-said he had something to tell me that could affect you but it would be better if he told me, and then I could break it to you instead.”
My grip tightened on the steering wheel. “Did he tell you what it was?”
“Not quite. He just kept going on about how he did something bad but it was to save your life,” he replied. “I sent him away but he went to tell Lorenzo instead. I told him to just tell you. I didn’t want to be burdened with another secret Jordan.”
“Burdened with a secret that could ultimately ruin my life.” My jaw twitched and I felt my rage bubbling to the surface. “Why are you only telling me about this now? So you and your father decided to keep this from me? Why tell me now?”
“I don’t know Jordan,” he stabbed his fingers through his hair. “Because you deserve to know? Because I was kind of hoping he would have gotten around to telling you by now…Please don’t make this about me JC. That’s not fair.”
“So it’s my problem. You don’t care. Couldn’t be bothered that Jones is harboring deep, dark secrets that could ultimately mess up my life. And now your father is involved.”
“I’m not going to do this with you,” he said in a calm voice. “Please stop the car.”
“With pleasure,” I slammed on the breaks in the middle of the highway. As soon as Kyle jumped out I sped off before he had a chance to close the door.
I hated it when people kept secrets from me and he knew that better than anyone else. He had done this before and he was doing it again. I wasn’t going to be so forgiving this time.
I needed answers. I was going to get to the bottom of this. First, I was going to drive to the hospital and then I was going to go and get answers from my deadbeat dad. He had better tell me the truth and nothing but the truth, or so help him, God.
I was not in a mood to be messed with. Not today.
But there was something I needed to know first. I gave a command for a familiar number to be dialed. She answered on the first ring.
“Did you know?”
She knew better than to feign innocence. “He mentioned it but-”
“So both you and your husband decided to keep secrets from me? Are we keeping secrets from each other Maya? You are such a hypocrite you know that?!”
“Jordan give me a chance to explain. Where are you? Where is Kyle? Let me com-.”
“No.” I cut the call and by this time my anger had bubbled to the surface and I was close to exploding.
I sensed a pattern here, so one by one. I dialed all my so-called loyal circle.
Lorenzo didn’t deny it either and told me we needed to have the conversation in person then hanging up on me before I could. Jones literally broke down and couldn’t stop apologizing. Well he could take his apologies and shove them.
