The deputy guarding the barrier was used to boredom. Cigarettes, texting, a bit of FM radio, almost any innterruption that killed a few minutes was welcome. The exception was when his boss called.
He looked at the ringing phone oblivious to the shrill tone meant to be heard when he was out of the vehicle. With a sigh he answered, "Yeah?".
A quick query came.
The trooper replied, "Yeah maybe ten minutes ago? OK, should I wait for the truck...what the kids? No, I can catchup.", he started his cruiser, "yeah I'll make sure they're gone."
The deputy's car tore out of the driveway and accelerated down the road in the direction the team had headed.
