It was around 4:30 in the evening, and college had finally come to an end.
Shreya stepped out through the college gates, letting out a long, exhausted sigh.
"Finally! Freedom!" she whispered dramatically, as if she had just escaped from prison rather than finished a day of lectures.
She was wearing a white cotton top tucked into light-blue wide-leg jeans, paired with white sneakers and a small shoulder bag. A few strands of her dark hair had escaped from her loose ponytail, framing her face, while tiny silver earrings glimmered whenever she turned her head.
Her outfit was simple, comfortable, and effortlessly pretty—exactly what she needed after a hectic day at college.
Chennai's evening weather was warm and humid, with heavy clouds spreading across the sky. A gentle breeze occasionally swept through the streets, carrying the earthy smell of rain from somewhere nearby. The trees swayed slightly, and the roads shimmered beneath the cloudy evening light.
With her earphones plugged in, Shreya walked along the familiar streets, humming to her favourite song. Every now and then, she would dramatically lip-sync a lyric, completely forgetting that other people existed. She was in her own little world.
Until—
BZZZT! BZZZT!
Her phone vibrated inside her hand.
She paused the music and glanced at the screen.
WhatsApp — Harish 💬
Harish: Heyyy, Shreya! How are you doing?
Shreya smiled faintly and started typing while continuing to walk.
Shreya: Heyyy! I'm good. Just on my way back home after college. What about you?
Harish: I'm good too! How was your day?
Shreya: Don't even ask. Lectures, assignments, and more lectures. I think college is slowly stealing my soul. 😭
Harish: 😂😂 That bad?
Shreya: WORSE. If tomorrow is another hectic day, I'm officially disappearing.
Harish: And where exactly will you disappear to?
Shreya: Somewhere with good food, beautiful views, and absolutely no professors.
Harish: Sounds like you need a vacation.
Shreya: Finally! Someone understands my suffering. 😭❤️
Harish: Anyway, have you eaten anything?
Shreya: Does stealing a few fries from my friend's lunch count?
Harish: Shreya! 😂
Shreya: What? Food tastes better when it belongs to someone else.
Harish: You're never going to change, are you?
Shreya: Never. It's part of my personality. 😌
Harish: 😂😂 Alright, reach home safely. Talk to you later!
Shreya: Sureee. Bye!
She slipped her phone into her bag, put her earphones back on, and resumed walking.
Just then, the first tiny raindrop landed on the back of her hand.
She looked up at the sky.
"Oh, seriously? Now you're going to cry too?" she muttered at the clouds.
A few more drops followed, making her quicken her pace. She was just about to take shelter beneath a nearby shop's awning when—
BZZZT!
Another notification appeared.
This time, the name on her screen made her stop in her tracks.
Kai 💬
For a moment, she simply stared at it.
Then a slow smile spread across her face.
Kai? After all this time?
She immediately opened the chat.
Kai: Hey, Shreya! How are you doing?
Shreya: WAIT. KAI?! 😭😂
Kai: Why are you shouting through text?
Shreya: Because I CAN! Where have you disappeared all these days?
Kai: Busy living my life, unlike some people who spend all day complaining about college. 😂
Shreya: EXCUSE ME?! My complaints are completely justified.
Kai: Sure, madam. Whatever makes you happy.
Shreya: Anyway, how have you been? It's been ages!
Kai: Pretty good, actually. What about you? Still in Chennai?
Shreya: Yep! Still here, still studying, still surviving somehow. 😂
Kai: Good. Because I have something to ask you.
Shreya narrowed her eyes at the screen.
Shreya: Why does that sound suspicious?
Kai: Can you let me finish before judging me?
Shreya: No promises. Go on. 👀
Kai: So, tell me something. Have you ever been on a cruise?
Shreya stopped typing.
Shreya: A cruise? No. Why?
Kai: What if I told you that you might get the chance to go on one soon?
Shreya: KAI. WHAT ARE YOU PLANNING? 😭
Kai: 😂😂 Relax! I'm talking about a cruise trip from Chennai to Lakshadweep.
Shreya's eyes widened.
The rain was now falling steadily, tapping against the awning above her head, but she barely noticed.
Shreya: WAITTT. LAKSHADWEEP?! ON A CRUISE?!
Kai: YES, SHREYA. 😂
Shreya: Blue water, sunsets, cute pictures, sea breeze, and unlimited opportunities to annoy you?
Kai: I knew you'd focus on annoying me.
Shreya: It's my special talent. Anyway, who's coming?
Kai: Me, Dimple, and Somesh. And we're inviting you.
Shreya: OH MY GOD. DIMPLE AND SOMESH TOO?!
Kai: Yep. Imagine the four of us together for an entire trip.
Shreya: That's either going to be the best experience of our lives or a complete disaster.
Kai: Probably both.
Shreya: 😂😂 Okay, but when is this happening?
Kai: We're planning everything now. I wanted to ask you first.
Shreya looked out at the rain-soaked street, her reflection faintly visible on the glass beside her.
For weeks, her life had been the same routine: college, assignments, home, sleep, repeat.
And now, out of nowhere, an adventure was waiting for her.
She didn't even need to think twice.
Shreya: SURE! I'M IN! ❤️🚢
Kai: THAT'S THE SPIRIT!
Shreya: But listen carefully, Kai. If this trip turns out to be boring, I'm blaming you for the rest of your life.
Kai: And if it's amazing?
Shreya: I'll consider not blocking you.
Kai: Such generosity. I'm touched. 🥹
Shreya: You should be. 😂
Kai: Alright, madam. I'll send you the details soon. Get ready!
Shreya: Born ready, Captain! 🫡
Kai: And Shreya?
Shreya: What now?
Kai: I've missed our conversations. It's good to talk to you again.
For the first time since opening the chat, Shreya didn't immediately have a sarcastic reply.
She smiled at the screen.
Shreya: Yeah. It's good to talk to you too, Kai. ❤️
