6:15 PM | Chennai
The moment Shreya reached home, she kicked off her sneakers near the entrance, dropped her bag on the sofa, and rushed straight to her bedroom.
"LAKSHADWEEP, HERE I COME!" she announced to absolutely nobody.
She grabbed her laptop, sat cross-legged on her bed, and opened the cruise booking website.
The ship was scheduled to depart from Chennai, with Lakshadweep as its destination. Pictures of the enormous cruise ship filled her screen—beautiful ocean views, luxurious decks, restaurants, and balconies overlooking the endless blue sea.
Shreya's eyes sparkled.
"Okay, Shreya. Stay calm. You're an educated girl. You can book a ticket without embarrassing yourself."
She selected her travel dates, entered her details, and proceeded to payment.
Shreya: "Come on, come on, come on!"
The payment page took a few seconds to load.
"WHY IS IT TAKING SO LONG?! I'M GOING TO MISS MY CRUISE!"
Finally—
BOOKING CONFIRMED!
Shreya practically jumped off her bed.
"YESSSSS!"
She immediately opened WhatsApp.
📱 WhatsApp — Kai 💬
Shreya: GUESS WHO JUST BOOKED HER TICKET?! 🚢❤️
Kai: You?
Shreya: NO, MY GRANDMOTHER. OF COURSE, ME! 😂
Kai: 😂😂 Congratulations, madam.
Shreya: It's official! I'm going to Lakshadweep!
Kai: Looking forward to having you on board.
Shreya: Don't act so formal. You know you're going to regret inviting me.
Kai: I already do.
Shreya: KAI! 😭
Kai: 😂 Just kidding. Send me your booking confirmation so we can coordinate everything.
Shreya: Done! Now excuse me. I have a very important task.
Kai: What's that?
Shreya: PACKINGGGGG! 🧳✨
Kai: May God protect your bedroom.
Shreya: BLOCKED. 😭
Shreya tossed her phone onto the bed and marched towards her wardrobe.
That was her first mistake.
Because Shreya didn't simply pack.
Shreya declared war on her wardrobe.
She pulled out a floral dress, held it against herself, and looked into the mirror.
"Too simple."
She grabbed a blue top.
"Too ordinary."
Next came a white dress.
"Too pretty. What if I spill something on it?"
She threw it onto the bed anyway.
Within ten minutes, her bed had disappeared beneath a mountain of clothes.
Dresses, jeans, tops, accessories, sunglasses, and a suspicious number of hair clips were scattered everywhere.
Shreya stood in the middle of the disaster with her hands on her hips.
"Why do I have so many clothes and absolutely nothing to wear?"
She picked up a dress from the floor, stepped backwards to inspect it, and immediately tripped over her own suitcase.
"WHOA—!"
THUD!
She landed on the bed.
For three seconds, she lay perfectly still.
Then she lifted her head.
"I'm okay!"
Nobody had asked.
She got up, grabbed another outfit, and began stuffing clothes into her suitcase.
Five minutes later, she realised she'd forgotten her toiletries.
She rushed to the bathroom.
Then she remembered her sunglasses.
Back to the bedroom.
Then her charger.
Then her favourite lip balm.
Then her passport.
She stopped abruptly.
"MY PASSPORT!"
She ran towards her study table, grabbed it, and hugged it to her chest.
"You're the most important person in my life right now."
Her phone buzzed.
Dimple: GIRLLLLL! HAVE YOU BOOKED YOUR TICKET?
Shreya: YESSSS! ❤️🚢
Dimple: GOOD. NOW PLEASE TELL ME YOU'RE PACKING SENSIBLY.
Shreya looked at the clothes covering her bed, the floor, and half her desk.
Shreya: Define sensibly.
Dimple: SHREYA.
Shreya: 😂😂 I HAVE EVERYTHING UNDER CONTROL.
At that exact moment, she stepped on a loose T-shirt, slipped, and knocked over a pile of folded clothes.
She stared at the mess.
"...Almost everything."
Meanwhile, Somewhere in Chennai 🌆
7:00 PM | Near the Hospital
Kai had just finished his hospital duty.
As a medical student, his days were usually packed with classes, clinical responsibilities, and exhausting hours at the hospital. By the time he stepped outside, his shoulders ached, and all he wanted was a hot shower and a few hours of sleep.
He adjusted his backpack and walked towards his bike.
Then he saw her.
Lara.
She stood near the hospital entrance, talking animatedly about something that had apparently happened during her day. Her hair fell gently over her shoulders, and the evening light illuminated her face.
Kai stopped walking.
Oh.
There she was.
The girl who could make an exhausting day feel lighter simply by appearing in front of him.
The girl whose smile could make him forget every sensible thought in his head.
The girl he had liked for longer than he was willing to admit.
And, unfortunately for his remaining brain cells, she was standing right in front of him.
Lara: "...and then she actually told me that I was wrong! Can you believe that?"
Kai blinked.
She was talking.
She was definitely talking.
Was he listening?
Absolutely not.
His brain had officially left the conversation.
Lara: "Kai?"
He stared at her.
Kai: "Hmm?"
Lara: "I said, can you believe that?"
Kai: "Of course."
Lara: "Of course WHAT?"
Kai's brain scrambled desperately for an answer.
Kai: "I mean... absolutely unbelievable."
Lara narrowed her eyes.
Lara: "You have no idea what I'm talking about, do you?"
Kai gave her his most innocent smile.
Kai: "I have a general idea."
Lara: "Kai!"
Kai: "Okay, okay! I was listening!"
Lara: "Really? Then what did I just say?"
Silence.
A vehicle passed behind them.
Somewhere, a bird chirped.
Kai considered becoming a full-time patient rather than answering the question.
Kai: "Something important?"
Lara stared at him.
Then she burst out laughing.
Lara: "YOU WEREN'T LISTENING AT ALL!"
Kai rubbed the back of his neck, smiling sheepishly.
Kai: "Sorry. Long day."
Lara: "You're impossible."
Kai: "I've been told."
She shook her head, still smiling.
Lara: "Anyway, I have to go. I'll see you tomorrow, okay?"
Kai: "Yeah. Sure. See you tomorrow."
Lara: "And next time, actually listen when I'm talking!"
Kai: "I promise!"
Lara waved goodbye and walked away.
Kai stood there, watching her disappear into the evening crowd.
A ridiculous smile slowly spread across his face.
He let out a long breath.
"She has my heart," he murmured to himself.
Then he shook his head, laughed quietly, and walked towards his bike.
"Completely. Absolutely. Irretrievably."
He put on his helmet, started the engine, and drove home.
At the first traffic signal, he stopped and found himself smiling again.
Get a grip, Kai.
He tried to think about his hospital duty.
Lara's smile appeared in his mind.
He thought about tomorrow's classes.
Lara's laugh interrupted his thoughts.
He thought about literally anything else.
His brain said, Lara.
Kai sighed.
"I'm a medical student. I should be able to diagnose what's wrong with me."
He paused.
"Unfortunately, the symptoms are chronic, and the patient is an idiot."
He laughed at himself and continued driving.
Little did he know that while he was busy losing his mind over Lara, Shreya was preparing for a cruise that would soon bring their worlds together again.
And somewhere between the ocean breeze, four friends, and a journey full of surprises, life was getting ready to complicate everything.
