Maestras: feminización, desvalorización y bajos salarios

Abstract

This project addresses the issue of the feminization of the teaching profession in primary schools in the Autonomous City of Buenos Aires (CABA). By "feminization of the teaching profession" is understood the statistically proven fact that teaching is a profession studied and practiced mainly by women. The work develops some of the possible causes of the naturalization of gender roles. A historical tour is carried out in which special emphasis is placed on the role that society has given to men and women in education. In addition, it investigates the salary asymmetry between the salaries received by men and women in the different professional fields. It can be inferred that low teacher salaries are a reflection of the feminization of the teaching profession. Although there is currently no difference in the remuneration received by men and women, teaching practices, historically related to femininity, affect social value and teacher salary.
