Three days passed.
Three nights in the Chamber of Echoes, three mornings of waking up with someone else's memories settling into the spaces between her own like water finding its level. Three days of training in the Whispering Woods, the shadows answering her more quickly each time, more cleanly, with less of the wild careening quality of the first session.
Three mornings of moonflowers on her doorstep.
She had not mentioned the third one in her journal. She had written around it deliberately, covering the space where she might have written about it with other things—details of the training, a question for Nyx about the Shadow Realm's council structure, a description of something Mira had said that made her laugh. Nyx had not commented on the gap. Elara suspected she knew exactly where the gap was and was choosing not to press, which was its own kind of consideration.
On the fourth morning, she came downstairs to open the shop and found Kael already there.
Not at the door. Inside—she had given him a key three days ago, a practical decision, she had told herself, and Mira had given her a particular look that she had chosen to ignore. He was sitting in the armchair by the fiction shelves, reading, and he had apparently made tea at some point because there were two cups on the counter and one of them was clearly hers, prepared exactly as she took it, which she had not told him, and which meant he had noticed.
She stopped at the foot of the stairs and looked at him.
He looked up.
"You made tea," she said.
"You were still asleep." He turned a page. "The shop opens in twenty minutes."
"I know when my shop opens."
"Then you know you have time to drink your tea before it does."
She crossed to the counter, picked up the cup, and stood there for a moment, testing the temperature with both hands before drinking, which was something she did every time and which she had never thought about until this moment when it occurred to her that he had noticed it too and had timed the tea accordingly.
She sat on the edge of the counter, drank her tea, and watched him read in her armchair.
The morning light came through the front windows and fell across him in a way that did something specific to the silver of his hair, and he sat with the book in a way that was different from how he moved in the woods or in conversation—less controlled, marginally, the control being something he applied deliberately and which relaxed when he believed no one was watching.
She was watching.
After a moment, he said, without looking up: "You're staring."
"I'm observing," she said. "There's a difference."
A pause. "What are you observing?"
"You look different when you think no one's paying attention."
He turned a page. "Different how?"
"Less like a king," she said. "More like a person."
He was quiet. Then, still not looking up: "Those aren't mutually exclusive."
"I know. But they don't often look the same." She finished her tea. "Nyx told me you read. In her journal entries, she mentioned it once that you had an entire library and you used it." She paused. "She said it was one of the first things she noticed about you."
"Did she?"
"She said, and I'm quoting: 'A man who actually reads the books rather than collecting them for appearances—that tells you something specific about the quality of his solitude.'" Elara tilted her head. "I thought that was a remarkable thing to say about someone you were trying very hard not to be in love with."
He looked up.
She held his gaze without looking away.
"She tells you things," he said.
"We're the same person. It's efficient." She slid off the counter. "It also means that when I notice something about you, she already knows about it, and when she notices something about you from her end, I already know about it, and between us we have rather a thorough picture."
He studied her with the expression she was still mapping, the one that kept its cards very close and only occasionally let one fall.
"Should I be concerned," he said, "about what that picture looks like?"
"No," she said. "You should probably be something else, but not concerned."
She went to unlock the front door before he could respond to that, because she had learned from watching Nyx in the mirror that the best way to say something you meant was to say it and then give it space to land rather than immediately filling the space with qualifications.
The morning passed quietly.
Kael stayed, which was new—usually he came and went with a specific purpose, but today he stayed in the armchair and read, and occasionally customers came in and looked at him with varying degrees of curiosity, which he met with such consistent indifference that most of them concluded he was simply a very large, very quiet regular.
Mira came at eleven and stopped in the doorway and looked at the domestic scene with an expression Elara chose not to acknowledge.
"I brought lunch," Mira said carefully.
"Thank you," Elara said.
"There are three of us."
"I can see that."
"I brought lunch for three of us."
"Mira."
"I'm just noting that I anticipated this development with some accuracy." Mira came inside, set the basket on the counter, and very carefully did not say anything else, which cost her visibly.
They ate lunch in the bookshop—Elara at the counter, Kael in his armchair with the plate balanced on the armrest, Mira on the step-stool she used for the high shelves because she refused to stand and eat, and the only chairs were occupied.
"Can I ask you something?" Mira said to Kael.
"Yes," he said.
"The three hundred years thing." She chewed thoughtfully. "What do you do with that much time? What does that look like? Does it go fast, or—"
"It varies," he said. He seemed to be considering how much to say. "The first fifty years are the worst. After that, you learn how to exist in long stretches without milestones. How to organize time differently."
