Second Chances At The Cafe

Chapter 1: Reunited in the Rain

The rich aroma of cinnamon and freshly brewed coffee had always been my safe haven, but on that rainy afternoon, my little coffee shop felt emptier than ever. I was just reaching to flip the sign on the door to "Closed" when the chime above the door stopped me.

A sudden gust of cold wind blew through, bringing with it the man who stopped my world in its tracks.

It was him. Adrián.

His dark hair was damp with rain, and his leather jacket gave him an effortless, polished look. His eyes—that striking green I had spent two long years trying to forget—locked onto mine. He stood frozen in the doorway, almost as if he were afraid I’d disappear if he moved.

"Hey, Maya," he said softly. His deep, steady voice sent a sudden shiver through me.

"Adrián..." I could barely get his name out. I set my rag down on the counter, my legs feeling weak underneath me. "What are you doing here? Last I heard, you were taking that job overseas."

He took a few steps toward me, moving with that calm confidence he’d always had. Stopping just across the counter, he was close enough for me to catch the scent of rain and his familiar cologne.

"I came back, Maya. I came back for you," he said, looking straight into my eyes. "I spent every single day trying to convince myself that leaving was the right choice for my career. But the truth is, no city ever felt like home... because you are my home."

All the heartbreak and the long nights of missing him seemed to melt away under his gaze. Still, fear held me back.

"Adrián, it's been so long... things have changed," I whispered, trying to guard my heart.

Gently, he reached across the counter and brushed his hand against mine. The sudden spark made my breath catch. He laced his fingers through mine, holding on gently, promising without words that he wouldn't run off this time.

"I know how much I hurt you when I left," he murmured, leaning closer until we were just inches apart. "And I'm not asking you to pretend it didn't happen. I just want a fresh start. Let me win you back."

"What if I get hurt again?" I admitted, my voice barely above a whisper.

A small, tender smile touched his lips.

"Then we'll take it as slow as you need. Just give me one chance, Maya. One date. Tomorrow night. If you still want me to walk away after that, I will."

I looked down at our hands. My head told me it was a mistake, but my heart had already made up its mind.

"Okay," I whispered. "One date."
