The Billionaire Girl and the Jungle Ghost

Chapter 4: The Secret Buried Under Project Gongzu

The jungle did not sleep.

It breathed.

Slowly.

Dangerously.

Every shadow between the trees looked alive beneath the silver moonlight as cold wind moved through the forest like whispers carrying secrets too dark for humanity.

Shruti Talwar sat silently beside a dying fire near the abandoned observatory while staring at William Singh from across the room.

Or at least…

Trying not to stare.

He stood near broken computer screens wearing a black hoodie damp from rain, quietly repairing one of his strange AI devices beneath weak lantern light.

Everything about him felt contradictory.

He moved like someone dangerous.

But touched injured animals gently.

He looked emotionally distant.

Yet his eyes carried unbearable pain.

And somehow…

That silence around him affected her more than words ever could.

Shruti wrapped her arms around herself.

“You still haven’t explained anything properly,” she said finally.

William didn’t look up.

“You came here for truth.”

“I came here for answers.”

“That too.”

His calmness irritated her.

Maybe because it made her feel emotionally exposed.

Outside, thunder rolled across distant mountains.

The observatory’s broken ceiling allowed cold moonlight to fall across old maps, rusted machines, and walls covered with wildlife tracking symbols.

Shruti slowly walked toward one of the monitors.

Hundreds of blinking dots moved across a digital jungle map.

Animal migration routes.

Tiger zones.

Elephant pathways.

River systems.

But something felt wrong.

Several sections were marked with red circles connected to mining symbols.

“What is this?” she asked quietly.

William finally looked at her.

For a brief second, silence filled the room heavily.

Then he answered:

“Project Gongzu.”

The name itself sounded strange.

Ancient.

Dangerous.

Shruti frowned slightly.

“I’ve never heard of it.”

“You were never supposed to.”

William stood slowly.

His expression darkened.

“Project Gongzu was introduced publicly as an environmental AI system designed to protect wildlife migration patterns using predictive surveillance technology.”

“That sounds exactly like Talwar Global’s conservation programs.”

“Because Talwar Global helped build it.”

Her heartbeat slowed.

William walked toward the main screen and activated several encrypted files.

Images appeared rapidly.

Forests.

Satellite scans.

Animal tracking systems.

Underground resource maps.

Then suddenly—

Mining zones hidden beneath wildlife reserves.

Shruti’s face paled slightly.

William’s voice remained cold.

“Project Gongzu doesn’t protect forests.”

He looked directly into her eyes.

“It uses animal migration patterns to locate untouched natural resources hidden beneath protected ecosystems.”

The room felt smaller suddenly.

“No,” Shruti whispered instinctively.

William gave a tired smile.

Not mocking.

Just disappointed.

“That’s what I said when I first discovered it.”

Shruti stepped closer toward the screen.

Her father’s company logo appeared repeatedly inside classified documents.

Talwar Global Technologies.

Authorized Partner.

Environmental Intelligence Division.

She shook her head slowly.

“There’s some misunderstanding.”

“There isn’t.”

“My father funds wildlife protection across multiple countries.”

“And destroys ecosystems while pretending to save them.”

Her eyes flashed angrily.
