The pain I still choose

3. The Weight of Shared Skin

The interior of the sedan smelled of expensive leather and ozone. Aria sat as far from Bastian as the cramped space allowed, her wet dress leaving a dark stain on the upholstery. Despite the distance, the air between them was thick with a static charge. Every time the car hit a bump and their shoulders brushed, a spark of white-hot pain shot through her, followed by a lingering, honey-thick throb of desire that made her feel sick with herself.

Bastian sat staring out the window, his jaw set in a hard line. He looked like a man preparing for a war he knew he couldn't win. Aria watched the reflection of the city lights dance across his sharp features. He was still the most beautiful thing she had ever seen, and the most dangerous.

«Where are they taking us?» Aria asked, her voice trembling.

«To the Spire,» Bastian replied without looking at her. «Julian’s playground. He likes to watch the marks react in a controlled environment.»

«We aren't lab rats, Bastian.»

«In his eyes, we are exactly that. Why do you think he funds the restoration of those mirrors you love so much? He’s been keeping tabs on you for years, Aria. He’s been waiting for the moment you were vulnerable enough for me to find you.»

Aria felt a surge of indignation. «I wasn't vulnerable. I was fine until you showed up.»

Bastian finally turned to look at her, his eyes dark and unreadable. «You were a ghost. I’ve watched you from the shadows, Aria. I saw you in that studio, surrounded by broken things, trying to fix the world because you couldn't fix yourself. You weren't living. You were just waiting for the fire to come back.»

«I don't want the fire!» she shouted, the heat in her side spiking in response to her anger.

The car came to a smooth halt in front of a towering glass monolith that seemed to pierce the very clouds. This was the Spire, the heart of Julian’s empire. The men in suits opened the doors, ushering them toward a private elevator that moved with sickening speed.

When the doors opened, they were in a vast, circular room with floor-to-ceiling windows. The city spread out below them like a carpet of jewels. In the center of the room sat Julian, a man who looked younger than his reputation suggested, with silver hair and eyes that seemed to hold a thousand secrets.

«Aria. Bastian. So good of you to join me,» Julian said, rising from his chair. He didn't offer a hand; he simply circled them, his gaze lingering on the areas where their marks were hidden. «The resonance tonight was... spectacular. Even from the gallery floor, the sensors were picking up readings I haven't seen in decades.»

«What do you want, Julian?» Bastian growled, stepping in front of Aria.

«I want to understand the nature of the bond,» Julian said, his voice smooth and academic. «Most people have marks that are static. They are reminders of a moment. But yours... yours are evolving. They are living things. Don't you feel it? The way they grow when you are near each other?»

Aria looked at her hand. The skin was pale, but she could see the faint, blue veins pulsing in a way that wasn't natural.

«It’s an infection,» Aria said. «It’s a sickness you’re trying to turn into a science.»

Julian laughed, a dry, hollow sound. «It’s the future, my dear. Imagine a world where we can map the human heart through the skin. Where loyalty isn't a choice, but a physical necessity. You two are the key to that world.»

He gestured to a table in the corner, where a series of antique mirrors were arranged in a semi-circle. Aria recognized them immediately. They were pieces she had worked on over the last year, sent to her by 'anonymous' clients.

«You used me,» she whispered.

«I gave you the tools to see the truth,» Julian corrected. «Those mirrors are coated with a specific silver isotope that reacts to the energy of the marks. Look into them, Aria. Look at what you really are.»

Aria stepped toward the mirrors, Bastian following closely behind. As they stood before the glass, their reflections began to shift. The silver didn't show their faces; it showed the energy between them. A bridge of flickering, golden light connected their chests, weaving through the air like a web of silk and fire. It was beautiful and terrifying, a visual representation of the chains that bound them.

«It’s spreading,» Bastian whispered, his voice filled with a rare note of fear.

He was right. The golden light wasn't just connecting them; it was beginning to creep up their necks, toward their faces.

«The more you resist, the more it consumes,» Julian said, standing behind them. «The only way to control the heat is to surrender to it. If you fight the bond, it will eventually burn you from the inside out.»

Aria felt Bastian’s hand brush hers. This time, there was no spark, only a deep, resonant thrum that vibrated through her entire body. She looked at him in the mirror, and for a second, the hardness in his eyes vanished, replaced by a soul-deep exhaustion.

«We have to leave,» Bastian said, his voice barely audible.

«You can't leave,» Julian said, his tone turning cold. «Not until the harvest is complete. You are under my protection

now. Which means you are under my control.»

Suddenly, the lights in the room flickered and died. A loud, metallic crash echoed from the elevator bank.

«Julian! We have a breach!» a voice shouted over the intercom.

Bastian didn't hesitate. He grabbed Aria’s hand, ignored the surge of energy, and pulled her toward a side exit. «This is our only chance,» he hissed. «If we stay here, we’re just fuel for his machine.»

As they ran down the emergency stairs, Aria felt the mark on her ribs begin to pulse with a new, aggressive rhythm. It wasn't just heat anymore. It was a command. Stay together. Never let go.

Notes: Julian reveals that he has been using Aria’s restoration work to monitor their bond, which is now evolving into a visible energy field. A sudden security breach allows Aria and Bastian to escape, but the mark begins to exert a physical command over their movements.
