Many only wish to be treated for their afflictions, to be freed from what torments them, to find the strength to take the first step toward peace. Others are simply abandoned and forgotten by the world left to wander with whatever luck remains, trying to tame their inner demons with nothing but the trembling hand of uncertainty… Those who once faithfully believed they’d be protected by a higher power would soon find themselves drowning in the worst kind of torment.
Sibaté, a town in the Cundinamarca department of Colombia, is popularly known as the “Town of the Mad.” There lies the infamous Neuropsychiatric Hospital, a place whose dark history blurs the line between truth and horror. It remains unclear whether all who were admitted truly suffered from mental illness or if some were simply victims of vengeance or convenience. What was certain, however, is that once you entered, you died to the world. You were forgotten. No one would search for you, no one would mourn you. You’d only be remembered when your body was buried… within the very hospital.
It all began in 1937, with the opening of what would become the largest psychiatric hospital in the country, a last resort for those who had nowhere else to go. People from all over were sent to this grim institution.
This hospital had a peculiar feature: it was mixed-gender, and inside its walls were not only the mentally ill, but also individuals with drug addictions, victims of personal vendettas, and many others. The constant sedation, lack of humanity, and overwhelming neglect slowly turned the place into something more sinister. A space heavy with suffering, dark, oppressive, and emotionally toxic. Staff turnover became frequent, as few could endure the weight of what the hospital truly was.
Over the years, whispers of mistreatment grew louder. In 2009, the hospital was finally shut down due to poor administration, lack of resources, and the horrifying discovery of a secret cemetery on the premises where the forgotten were buried, unclaimed by their once-loved ones. It also housed a morgue, for those who died either of "natural causes" or from excessive sedation. A chapel stands at the center of the hospital’s darkest legends. It is said that at night, a black entity looms atop it haunting the patients, stealing their souls. Many called it The Evil One.
Walking through this place is like living hell on Earth. Forgotten, tormented, and tortured—both physically and mentally until your body becomes nothing more than another offering to a place that feeds on suffering. Once you enter the hospital, you never come out… and if by some miracle you do, the darkness follows you wherever you go.
What was meant to be a sanctuary for healing became the perfect site to exile a person from their own life. A person who came seeking help… and was repaid with eternal oblivion.
