Capítulo 17

Laura moves her things to Chris's house a few days later and a combined party is held in celebration of their union and business cooperation between the two companies, although Chris's family members were not very happy that he secretly married a woman who treated him with contempt in the past, they still attended the party.

Her mother especially didn't want to believe it and Mira wasn't enjoying it either.

Mira is the daughter of her uncle's friend and although Chris never agreed with anything, she was all over him and even at one point asked her uncle directly what he thought if they both got married.

He couldn't go to the place with Laura because of his mother and went with her and Mira instead, they soon arrived at the place for the party.

She saw Chris as she entered and quickly walked towards them with a smile on her face, she happily greeted her mother and nodded her head in greeting to the other girl and immediately understood that it was the famous Mira, she intertwined her hands with Chris.

Chris was slightly surprised but didn't move away and instead excused himself to go greet the guests with her, they were both stopped by Diane and two others after greeting some important guests and Chris recognized them as his old schoolmates.

“The groom is finally here, I thought he would run away like he did a while ago,” said Diana, her cousin, not very pleased that Laura married before her, especially to a man everyone despised but who turned out to be a rich man.

Not even her current boyfriend can surpass her status.

“Why did you keep Avan all these years if you were going to marry someone else?” Kayla also chimed in, still acting like Diane’s lackey after all these years.

She is one of the few who liked Chris back then and is very disappointed to see him end up with Laura despite how she treated him.

“I had no idea everyone was so concerned about my relationship and well-being; I'll take your words as a blessing for our relationship,” Laura replied.

“Don’t get so excited, who knows if he’ll act like someone else and bring another woman along soon?” Kayla accused, trying to compare him to her father.

Chris was offended by her words and took a step forward to silence her, but Laura stopped him, knowing that she was only attacking her.

“Is your stepmother treating you well? I heard she just had a baby after all these years,” Laura said, looking at Kayla, who clenched her hands into fists in rage.

“How dare you, Laura?”

“You should focus on getting a good husband instead of drooling over mine, Miss Kayla,” Laura told her and showed her ring before her eyes.

“Next time you see me, remember to add Ma’am,” she said again and pulled Chris with her away from them.

“I’m sorry you had to hear that. They’re not trying to hurt you, it’s just their attempt to attack me,” Laura explained to Chris, a few feet away from them.

“¿No es eso lo que tú también piensas?” dijo Chris y se apartó de ella tomando una copa de vino del camarero.

“¿Qué tonterías estás diciendo? Claro que no pensé así” dijo preguntándose por qué de repente está enojado con ella.

“Me parece que sí” insistió y se fue a otro lado, pero su madre se les acercó con Mira siguiéndola detrás y él se detuvo pero aún mantuvo distancia de ella.

“Mamá, no” dijo Chris al notar sus ojos fijos en Laura.

“¿Cómo ha estado señora?” preguntó Laura intentando entablar una conversación entre ellas pero ella se burló en su lugar.

“Así que aún me reconoces, pensé que nos veías como nadie hace años. No entiendo por qué decidiste casarte con mi hijo ahora” dijo la señora Hugh disgustada.

“Ella es en realidad la mujer que lo traicionó cuando no tenía nada y ahora regresó cuando está bien, qué mujer tan descarada es” también añadió Mira.

Como otros, ella también recibió la noticia de su matrimonio con dificultad y le costó mucho consuelo de la señora Hugh calmarse y venir aquí esta noche.

“¿Traicionó? Esa es una palabra bastante fuerte para usar” dijo Laura intentando sonar casual, no afectada por su sarcasmo.

“Mamá, por favor basta, este no es el lugar para esto” advirtió Chris y tomó la mano de Laura para irse.

“No te atrevas a irte de mi lado, Chris” gritó Mira enojada atrayendo la atención de los demás.

“¿Quién es esta?” preguntó Laura aunque ya sabía quién era, nadie la había presentado y definitivamente no estaba en la lista de invitados.

“Soy Mira, la mujer que se supone debía casarse con Chris si tú no hubieras aparecido” respondió Mira en voz alta.

Laura se volvió hacia Chris algo sorprendida por sus palabras, ella parece realmente destrozada y tiene lágrimas en los ojos.

“¿Se habrá vuelto un mujeriego en los años que estuvo lejos?” pensó Laura y negó con la cabeza suavemente.

“Nunca me casaría con alguien como ella” dijo Chris mirando a Laura mientras pronunciaba las palabras y añadió aún mirándola.

“Será mejor que te comportes si no quieres que te echen de aquí” dijo y se volvió hacia Mira, quien se alejó llorando y la señora Hugh la siguió.

Todos volvieron a seguir bebiendo y comiendo, pero no sin dudas en sus corazones sobre quién era Mira, mientras algunos concluyeron que debía ser una de las muchas mujeres que admiraban al CEO de la empresa Tk.

Laura tomó una copa de vino de uno de los camareros y se la bebió de un trago enojada consigo misma.

De repente se sintió mal por haber aceptado casarse con Chris sin pensarlo bien y tomó otra copa para beber pero Chris se la arrebató.

“¿Qué crees que estás haciendo? Te vas a emborrachar” la advirtió.

“¿Me pediste que me casara contigo para deshacerte de Mira? ¿No es una forma muy cruel de hacer sufrir a alguien que te ama?” le preguntó ya algo mareada y lo miró con rabia.

“¿Por qué te preocupa eso? ¿No aceptaste tú también para lograr algo?” respondió con indiferencia.
