"Hey," a voice rang from behind my head, and I turned around to find Kathryn standing behind me.
My eyes widened profusely, and she smiled brightly at me. "...H-hi," I stuttered, blinking a few times.
"I wanted to talk to you, but you left too fast," she laughed, and I couldn't help but be jealous. It was so beautiful. Like a symphony.
I shook my head dismissively, blushing at my thoughts. "I'm sorry, I had someone waiting for me."
"I wanted to welcome you to the school," she stated, pulling out a little wrapped box. "We don't get many exchange students here, so I personally wanted to welcome you with a gift!" She exclaimed excitedly.
I eyed the small box warily, before taking from her nervously. "You didn't have to do that."
"Don't worry about it!" She grinned, throwing her arms around her back, and latching her hands together. "Are you Spanish?" She asked, cocking her head to the side.
"No," I answered shortly. "I'm mixed." I stated, wishing she would just let me leave. Don't you know that I like your boyfriend? Isn't that like, a sin?
"Well, you're pretty. Do you want to sit with me at lunch?" No.
"Sure," I smiled politely, not wanting to be rude.
"Cool!" She grinned, pulling me along.
Once we were in the lunch room, I considered just leaving and eating with Mr. Rising, but I didn't want to be mean to her. She seemed so happy about it.
"I'll be right back," she beamed, going to get her lunch. I didn't have to because my Mom packed me some. She's being really obsessive and crazy about this whole school thing.
I begun to take the contents out of the bag, and roll my eyes when I look at the chocolate chip cookies that she clearly baked. What are we five now? Was this completely necessary?
"My mom never bakes me cookies," someone stated, sitting in the seat across from me.
I looked up to find David sitting there, and wasn't at all surprised. Of course they're going to sit together. They're together.
I only half smiled, trying to ignore the butterfly's in my stomach. "Yeah..." I trailed off, not really wanting to tell him that my Mom is acting like a nitwit. "She just had some left over so she threw 'em in there. No big deal."
He just laughed, then shook his head. As if seeing through my lies. "You're an only child aren't you?" He asked, the sound of his voice making my heart beat faster. So sexy.
"Um..." I nodded, clearly enchanted by my sinful thoughts of him, then quickly pulled myself out of it. "I mean, I have Logan and Blake now, but I guess they don't really count, do they?"
He just shrugged, then started to eat his fries. I pulled out my turkey sandwich, then pulled a cookie from the ziplock bag. "Here," I said, handing it to him.
He looked up at me, clearly confused, then a slow smile started to etch his face. "Thank you," he says while taking it from me, his eyes never leaving mine.
I smiled softly back at him, but it was cut short by the return of Kathryn. "Hi, baby!" She beamed, sitting her tray down and taking a seat next to him.
My smile faded, and I watched awkwardly as she planted a loving kiss on his lips. I ran my tongue over my lips, and then looked down at my food. I felt really guilty. Knowing that I've just eye raped her boyfriend not two seconds ago.
"Hey, Brooklyn!" Kathryn started when they finally parted lips, and I looked up at her attentively.
"This is David! This is my boyfriend," she explained, and I half smiled at how happy she was to say that. "David, this is my new best friend, Brooklyn." She beamed, and my eyes widened at the title "best friend".
Wait, what? I can't be best friends with her! Doesn't she already have one of those? My eyes widened even more, and I looked over at David, hoping that they couldn't sense the panic arising inside of me.
"I have to go," I stated, packing my lunch back up, and waving a quick 'goodbye'.
"What?" Kathryn started. "Why? We just started eating."
"I'm meant to be somewhere?" I said, and it came out more as a question than a statement. "I have to go see Mr. Rising." And that wasn't fully a lie, I did have to see him. To eat.
"Oh," she pouted, and I kind of felt bad. "Well then I'll see you in class, okay?"
"Okay!" I replied, leaving as fast as I could without running.
I walked into Mr. Rising's classroom, who was sitting at one of the students desks, just biting into his sub. "Hi," I mumbled, taking a seat next to him.
"I was starting to think you weren't coming." His mouth was full, and I could barely even understand him. I smiled at that, remembering how I like to talk with my mouth full too.
"Sorry." I, once again unpacked my lunch, and actually started to eat it this time. "My Mom made some cookies. Do you want one?" I asked, and he shrugged.
"You only have one," he observed, and I laughed.
"It's okay, we can split it." I smiled, breaking it down the middle, then handed it to him.
"You never talk," he says after a while, and I stare at him confused.
"I told you I'd be quiet."
