Back in the arena again, it was time for me to go back to training with a sword. I still had to hold Defender with both hands, I didn’t know how long it was going to take until I’m able to hold it with just one hand. But instead of me getting trained by Farrel and the others like before, I was going to be trained by Averyl.
Because I was told that Averyl hasn’t fought since his brother died, I was surprised when he told me that he was still going to be training me. But at the same time, I noticed how nervous he looked as he stared at the sword in his hand.
“Averyl,” I said to him calmly, “If you don’t wanna do this-”
“It’s okay,” he assured, “I’m willing to do this so I can help you. I’m gonna teach you everything you need to know about fighting and weapons. And also bunk some myths that you would see in movies. But before I do that, I wanna know what you’ve learned so far. Attack me.”
“What?” I questioned.
“Would you please stop questioning everything I tell you to do?” he frowned, “Now do as I say and attack me.”
I let out a sigh as I got into position while holding onto Defender with both hands.
“You’re holding the sword wrong,” Averyl suddenly told me, “Get it right.”
“Um, I still need to hold it with both hands.”
“I know, but you’re still holding it wrong.”
Huh, I didn’t realize there was a certain way to hold a sword with both hands. But which way was it? I decided to see if I had to put one hand over the other while gripping the handle.
“Nope,” Averyl said.
Oh, maybe it’s this way.
Sighs. This way?
“There you go.”
Oh finally. So the proper way to hold a sword with both hands is to have one up and near the blade and the other down near the bottom of the handle.
“The main things about holding a sword is having a good grip and being able to control it.”
“Um, quick question,” I suddenly spoke, “Won’t Defender be too powerful against you?”
“Not if you’re just practicing. Defender can sense when you’re battling an enemy, and as long it knows that you’re just practicing, it will act as a regular sword. Now, pretend that I’m an enemy and you need to attack me. Do it.”
Since I couldn’t question him, I might as well just do what he says while hoping that I won’t injure him in some way. So when I was ready, I went ahead and swung my sword at him. And just as I thought, he blocked the strike with his sword as he suddenly twisted his body until he was next to me as he gave me a hard shove which almost sent me down as I balanced myself.
Whoa, I was not expecting that. That was quick.
“Why are you still standing there?” Averyl demanded, “Don’t stop, keep fighting back.”
Oh boy, let’s see if I can do this. Once again, I attacked Averyl with my sword as he did the same with his. Damn, this guy seriously has skills. I knew I was going to lose as I felt him send a kick to my stomach which knocked me down.
“Come on,” he ordered, “Get up.”
Groan. I didn’t wanna keep doing this, but if he was going to help me become a warrior, I had no choice but to listen to him. So as soon as I was back on my feet, I again attacked Averyl with my sword, but like before, he was obviously better than me as he suddenly knocked the sword out of my hand and aimed the tip of his sword at my throat as I froze there in shock.
“Well, clearly you need more practice,” he stated while lowering his sword “But overall, not bad for a human.”
“Jeez,” I breathed while rubbing my throat where the tip of the sword nearly touched my skin.
“Hey, don’t worry, I’m gonna teach you the right way to become a warrior. Once you learn everything, you’ll be a master in no time.”
I let out a sigh while picking up my sword. How long will it be until I actually become a master? Or should I say if I become a master?
“I know using a sword is still going to get some used to,” he added, “Especially if you’re gonna use it with one hand. Everyone starts off being slow on their first try and they’re always trying to get faster with it. But here’s the truth about fencing, it’s not about speed which helps you succeed, it’s about timing, control, and fluidity. There is no need to get anywhere fast as long as you get there at the right time.”
“Huh, that sounds like something that should be in a fortune cookie.”
Averyl just gave a snicker when he added, “The main thing is- when you’re slow, you’re steady. When you’re steady, you’re smooth. And when you’re smooth, you’re fast. That is what helps you achieve your goals. Understand?”
“Yes,” I nodded.
“Good. Cause you’re gonna need to train a lot in order to become just as strong as a true warrior. Don’t forget to come here tomorrow at the same time.”
“Wait, what?” my eyes widen.
“I have to be here at 6 in the morning again?!”
“Yes,” he replied plainly, “Did you think that this was the only day I would give you a real training session? Every good warrior starts their day early.”
