CHAPTER ONE
DREAMS DO COME TRUE
Love, for me, once painted beautiful dreams of princes rescuing damsels in distress, and whisking them off their feet, onto their high horses, to a life of love, abundance and happiness, ever after. You know, fairytales, knights in shining amour, and rugged handmaids becoming glamourous princesses and queens. Picturing mates sculptured to perfection, a colorful life and beautiful babies. I dreamt of high roofed chapels, with bells ding-donging to my step, walking down a marble isle, in a dress only my mind could picture, to my waiting prince. Until I became of age, and what we termed love showed its true colors; dark and depressing. At first it is all rosy and infatuation gets the better of your mind, swooping you to cloud nine, without second thought. The dark traits that peep through are easily dismissible and overlooked. But once days turn innumerable, the plastering falls off, and the ugly colors behind the lovey- dovey curtain start showing. Flying fists, curses and insults; piercing words dispatched with intent to cause grievous harm, become a norm. While cheating and forgiving, just a game frequently played, with hearts at stake. And so, it was with the unions I found myself calling relationships. Self -worth, self- esteem and what made me who I was then, were stripped away, until just a cold, dark hollow stood where my heart used to be. It is not that I did not know how to act or react, but I feared the result. I feared finding myself lonely, with no one to call my own and to show off to friends as mine. I had to blend in, to belong. I stayed, in many a toxic relationship, protecting my dignity and vouching for public approval and acceptance. Not knowing I was brutally aiding in murdering my own emotions by stifling their true nature, for other people’s aggrandizement.
