Dear Authors,
Some of you probably noticed that Booknet has relatively strict rules when it comes to graphical content - book covers in particular. You might be wondering why it is prohibited to use images of naked people even for erotic books that are marked as 18+? In this article, we will name four reasons for these limitations.
1. Advertising a book with an erotic cover becomes much more difficult. For example, Facebook does not allow to use even a photo of a kissing couple. Their moderators will just decline a poster with a spicy book cover.
2. Most of the companies that process transactions on the Internet do not provide their services for erotic/porn sites. And it is quite possible that they would mistake Booknet for one of those if we allow nudity.
3. We respect the comfort of all our users. A significant fraction of readers come to the platform to read non-erotic and non-romance fiction. They might feel constrained just from looking at such covers. Above that, just imagine a situation when a man opens Booknet to read a LitRPG novel but bumps into erotic images on the main page right at the moment when his wife shows up from behind. It’s a fertile ground for mishaps.
4. Most of the authors of erotica tend to use images of overly sexualized people whose appearance is additionally enhanced in graphical editors. Part of the users who observe them would subconsciously compare these gorgeously looking men and women with themselves or with their partners. For most people that won’t do any harm. But studies show that this could provoke anxiety and depression for people with low self-esteem. Jokes aside, Booknet cares about the mental health of its users.
