I think he pulled an Oskar Schindler and used all his funds to help those around him until he was flat broke, but then lived the rest of his life comfortably ENOUGH by being provided for by the people he helped. What goes around comes around.
In my head he gave everything away and wasn't left with a pot to piss in but no matter what he did people just took until it was all gone and when it was he was just left to die

That sounds like what I think the story was really meant to be i have never heard of Oskar Schidler so I can't say I fully understand

he may have gone the Elvis path and had loads of people tapping him for money......
